Ragwort - The Problem

Chairpersons Report

Dear Members,
It’s hard to believe that we are a quarter of the way through the new season. Up to now the weather has been kind to us, the shows have been well attended and hopefully successful for you all. The committee still has to work very hard to prepare and stage these shows, so as an incentive we have launched a voucher scheme. The show secretary at each event( you will find their telephone number listed by each event in the calendar) needs help on the Saturday as well as the Sunday. Anyone who would like to come and help set up or help on the day will be rewarded by a voucher. This may be used to help towards entries at various shows, if you do not ride you can pass on the voucher to a friend or relative. We really do need your assistance and you will be surprised how much you can learn in the process. We have also set up on the website a sponsors list, laying out the different ways in which you can sponsor the club. E.g. sponsor a jump or a class at your favourite show. The money raised this year will be used to repair the badly leaking roof, being flat it constantly needs attention, so our aim is to slope the roof but this is not cheap and requires a lot of effort to raise the money required. Please help us to maintain and improve your club.
Pat Flavell, Chairperson

AREA 5 RIDERS QUALIFY FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

On a cold, grey day, several Rugby riding club members travelled to Milton Keynes Equestrian Centre to compete in the British Riding Clubs Area Open and Novice Hunter trials Qualifier.
The competition started early with Helen Brown contesting the senior open section, her horse Murphy’s Pride gave her a great clear round to finish in eight place.
In the Junior Open, Samantha Harris on Master Ted had a superb round to finish a well-deserved second, which should earn her a place at the National Championships to be held at Peterborough in June.
In the third event of the day, the Rugby Lions senior novice team consisting of Anna Bancroft on He’s Smurfy, Sue Parker on Earl Tatler, Susan Bradshaw on Llantyan Casino and Emma Rogers on Fiorentina Flame put in an unbeatable display to finish on one time penalty to take first place and qualification for the National Championships.
In the individual section Susan Bradshaw finished closest to the optimum time to win the event, with Anna Bancroft in second place.
Last to compete were the junior novice riders, where Rugby was represented by two teams which both went extremely well to finish in 4th and 5th place respectively.
The individual title went to Rugby rider Jess Whitworth on Twiglet, with Laura Findlay on Cerewood Chancer third, Amy Pugh on Lynwood Cane fifth, and Eleanor Bancroft on Blueboy sixth.
The winning senior novice team, the junior individual winner and second placed Samantha Harris should all qualify for places at the British Riding Clubs National Hunter Trials Championships to be held at Wittering Grange, Peterborough on 1st June. All in all an excellent start to the new season.

Ragwort - The Problem

Ragwort – The Problem

Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea L.) is an injurious weed specified in the Weeds Act 1959 requiring the occupier of land on which ragwort is growing to take action to prevent this weed from spreading.
Over 500 horses died from ragwort poisoning in 2001 and as the weed proliferates it is estimated that deaths will increase to around 750 this year. Ragwort poisoning can occur at any time of year. A small intake of ragwort over a long period can be just as damaging as a large intake on a single occasion.
There is now a very effective product for ragwort control in Barrier H.
Every pack of Barrier H (the new environmentally safe Ragwort control product) bought through your Riding Club will generate £1.00 sponsorship towards club funds. An additional £1.00 will be paid to the Liverpool University Ragwort Trust research project run by Dr Derek Knottenbelt, Head of equine medicine at the Liverpool University Veterinary Hospital to help research into developing an equine blood test for ragwort poisoning.
One 5 litre pack of Barrier H (£52.88 per 5L can) treats up to 1600 small ragwort plants and can be kept from year to year if stored in a frost free environment and shaken well before use.
By purchasing Barrier H through your Riding Club, you will be helping your club and supporting Ragwort Blood Poisoning Research at the same time
So Contact Val Malka on 2476 543 040 or email info@rugbyridingclub.co.uk to place ypur order or for more details
