Chairpersons Report

As the 2003 season is about to start the Rugby Riding Committee would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year.
Enclosed with this mail shot you will find your membership forms, and if when you join , you feel you can perhaps give any time to help us either before or during a show day please fill in the questionnaire at the bottom of the form. This can also include any friends or relatives that perhaps come with you or feel they might like to give us a hand independently.

One new addition you will find in the clubhouse when the season opens will be a suggestion box. This idea was put forward by one of our members and if it can benefit us all, it will be well worth its appearance.

It has been suggested that the club does not put on enough social events, and I wholeheartedly agree. The problem being that the main committee have little enough time to prepare and run shows. So if any of you feel you would like to help we would be very interested. You wouldn’t have to be on the main committee, as a special sub committee would be created whose job would be to run social events. Please contact me if you are interested so we can get together and talk it through.

The RRC committee has set itself the large and expensive task this year of renewing the clubhouse roof , We are also hoping to buy some additional show jumps. We already have some new fillers being delivered which have been kindly made by Colin Rogers. Mr Rogers was the gentleman who designed and made the domino fillers and the John Merris Jump, as well as several other fillers out on the field. Some of you might thank him, but I feel many of you who had problems getting your horse near them let alone jumping them might want to thank him even more. Well I haven’t seen the new fillers yet but I expect they will be as challenging as ever. Thank you Colin

Another project we are aiming for , is to purchase a larger tractor in the hope that if lorries do get stuck in the bad weather , we will be able to pull them off with the minimum of fuss.

All these things are expensive items but if we have as much help and support from you all as in the past, the club can only go from strength to strength .

See you all soon, Pat Flavell

Area 5 News

Over eighty riding club members from affiliated clubs in the local area, attended the Annual British Riding Clubs Area 5 quiz night and Awards Ceremony held at Weston under Wetherley Village Hall on Saturday 7th December. The evening started with an entertaining quiz organised by Tony Parker, followed by an extremely enjoyable supper, provided by several of the committee.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of rosettes and trophies to the winning teams and individuals in every discipline, these awards were presented by Mr David Briggs, a member of the British Riding Clubs Executive and Area 5 Committee.

Rugby Riding Club have again had a very successful season, finishing overall first in the team section of the novice show jumping, with Sue Parker and Earl Tatler taking the individual title, and Terrie Cowley finishing fifth. In the Dressage section, Rugby again took the team award, and Penny Boon on Mirage was individual champion. Rugby finished runners up in the Riders Test team competition with Susan Bullock on Celtic Cross fourth and Penny Boon on Mirage fifth individually.

Moving on to the eventing awards, Cate Watson on Malcolm finished second in the novice section and Carrie Davidson on Lynwood Cane 3rd in the open and Rugby also finished overall first in the novice horse trials team competition.

The juniors riders from Rugby, who had an extremely successful day at the National Riding Club Championships took second place just behind Cherwell Valley Riding Club. The night ended with the presentation of the Team Challenge Cup to the club achieving the highest number of points throughout the season taking into account every discipline and for the second year running this was awarded to Rugby Riding Club, a splendid achievement for everyone.

Congratulations to everyone who has represented the club over the last year and I look forward to seeing you all again in the new season. Don’t forget to check the calendar page for next years dates, details will be posted on the website as they become available. Please remember that to compete in Area 5 competitions you must be a current paid up affiliated member of the club and your horse / pony must have an up to date Pre vac T certificate, a copy of which must be sent to me if you wish to compete.

AREA 5 CLUB NEWS

Last season proved extremely successful for both Junior and Senior riders at regional and national level, and in recognition of these achievements, the Rugby Riding Club committee decided to instigate an award scheme for Area 5 riders.

Competition within Area 5 is very strong and many members of the club have qualified for British Riding Club National Championships, with several of them being placed at these events.

The Juniors have two National Champions, Firstly Sophia Icke in the Junior Horse Trials, and secondly Gemma Carman in the Riders Test - a great achievement for both young riders and reflects the enormous talent within the club.

Throughout the year there has been a tremendous team spirit amongst the riders, and they have chosen their own club colours of Burgundy and silver, which they can be seen wearing at area events.
